When I looked at Tesla\u2019s latest production and delivery report for the first quarter, I was struck by how many more vehicles were produced than delivered \u2014 408,386 were produced and 358,023 were delivered. That gap of 50,000, or about 14% of the total delivered and 12% of the total produced, seemed pretty big. However, I didn\u2019t dig into it, figuring we had seen similar amounts in the past.<\/p>\n

Well, it turns out this was a record number of vehicles in inventory for Tesla. \u201cTesla built over 50,000 more EVs than it sold in Q1 2026, marking its largest-ever inventory surplus,\u201d Autoblog<\/em> reports. And, importantly, \u201cfor a company that built its dominance on demand outpacing supply, this backlog is a warning sign that the tide may be turning.\u201d Yeah \u2026 it\u2019s been a while since demand outpaced supply (two to three years at least, I\u2019d say), but it is notable that this was one of its biggest hype points for many years, and also a significant factor allowing Tesla to sell cars for much more than it cost to produce them.<\/p>\n

Another interesting thing is that Tesla\u2019s production capacity is still far higher than production output. It\u2019s not like this just happened because Tesla was producing as many cars as it could and demand was just a bit low \u2014 Tesla has been producing much less than it\u2019s capable of producing for years. But, for one reason or another, instead of scaling back production more, the company kept pumping out new vehicles and ended up producing enough to set a new record inventory total. The previous record quarter for this stat was Q1 2024, when 46,561 more Tesla vehicles were produced than sold\/delivered and Tesla sold more vehicles overall. Tesla sold more cars in that quarter than it did last quarter \u2014 386,810 versus the 358,023 mentioned above.<\/p>\n

Now, we should remember that some of these inventory vehicles are simply in transit to customers. You can\u2019t avoid that vehicles produced in the last week or two of the quarter need time to get to their buyers. But that doesn\u2019t change the fact that Tesla just saw a record gap between the number of vehicles produced and the number delivered.<\/p>\n
