This rollback has upended federal tailpipe emissions regulations, which the administration says will curb vehicle prices and save Americans as much as $<span class=\"numbers\">1<\/span>.<span class=\"numbers\">3<\/span> trillion by\u00a0<span class=\"numbers\">2055<\/span>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\">But the <span class=\"caps\">EPA<\/span>\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/system\/files\/documents\/2026-02\/420r26002.pdf\">own analysis<\/a> tells a\u00a0different story, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2026\/feb\/15\/trump-climate-ruling\">The Guardian reports<\/a>. It estimates Americans will rack up more than $<span class=\"numbers\">1<\/span>.<span class=\"numbers\">4<\/span> trillion as they buy more fuel, need more repairs, and face increased traffic and noise \u2014 essentially negating those touted savings.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\">And it\u2019s unlikely that U.S. automakers will backtrack on vehicle efficiency like the <span class=\"caps\">EPA<\/span> wants, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/02\/16\/climate\/endangerment-finding-auto-emissions-regulations.html\">experts tell The New York Times<\/a>. The rest of the world is still moving toward electric vehicles, so cars that use more gasoline are the opposite of what other countries \u2014 and many Americans \u2014 will\u00a0buy.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong>Fake public comments are clean energy\u2019s latest threat<\/strong><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">As if clean energy didn\u2019t have enough challenges to deal\u00a0with.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Last June, Southern California\u2019s top air-quality authority rejected a\u00a0plan that would have pushed the region away from gas appliances. Regulators received tens of thousands of comments opposing the plan, but a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/environment\/story\/2026-02-17\/ai-powered-campaign-may-have-killed-key-vote-on-air-quality\">Los Angeles Times investigation found<\/a> at least <span class=\"numbers\">20<\/span>,<span class=\"numbers\">000<\/span> of them appear to have been AI-generated. The agency\u2019s staffers also reached out to some alleged commenters, and at least three said they hadn\u2019t written a\u00a0comment.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The incident is similar to what <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canarymedia.com\/articles\/solar\/faked-public-comments-ohio-solar-farm\">Canary Media\u2019s Kathiann M. Kowalski reported on<\/a> earlier this month. In Ohio, state regulators may reject a\u00a0solar farm that received dozens of public comments opposing it.
