High-frequency digital power-switching technologies are already used for specialized purposes such as massive <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hitachienergy.com\/us\/en\/products-and-solutions\/transformers\/power-transformers\/hvdc-converter-transformers\">high-voltage direct current (<span class=\"caps\">HVDC<\/span>) converters<\/a>. And inverters \u2014 another form of digital power-switching tech \u2014 are an integral part of <span class=\"caps\">EV<\/span> chargers and solar and battery installations.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Over the past decade or more, various efforts to expand the role of solid-state power-conversion technologies to replace a\u00a0wider array of systems have struggled to gain traction, given <a href=\"https:\/\/www.powermag.com\/the-solid-state-shift-reinventing-the-transformer-for-modern-grids\/\">high costs and technical challenges<\/a>. But Heron Power\u2019s Baglino thinks that the time is right for this tech, as costs come down and major customers seek out effective alternatives to the backlogged and increasingly expensive conventional options.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\">As with many other digital technologies, <span class=\"push-double\"\/>\u200b<span class=\"pull-double\">\u201c<\/span>power semiconductors have had their own version of Moore\u2019s law,\u201d Baglino said. In the past five years or so, these improvements have made it <span class=\"push-double\"\/>\u200b<span class=\"pull-double\">\u201c<\/span>not only feasible but economically attractive to replace inverter skids \u2014 with an old-school transformer at solar and battery facilities \u2014 with a\u00a0power electronics solution.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Those <span class=\"push-double\"\/>\u200b<span class=\"pull-double\">\u201c<\/span>inverter skids\u201d he mentioned are shipping-container-size combinations of electrical gear \u2014 step-down and step-up transformers, switching and protection gear, and inverters themselves \u2014 that convert direct current from solar panels and batteries to grid-ready alternating current. Similar combinations of gear are used to convert grid electricity to direct current needed to power heftier commercial and industrial sites \u2014 such as data centers.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Unlike traditional high-efficiency transformers, solid-state power-conversion devices don\u2019t need specialized <a href=\"https:\/\/nationalinterest.org\/blog\/energy-world\/the-little-monopoly-holding-back-the-clean-energy-transition\">grain-oriented electrical steel<\/a>, which is now in short supply. Instead, they use the same silicon carbide and gallium arsenide semiconductor supply chains feeding <span class=\"caps\">EV<\/span> markets, Baglino said, <span class=\"push-double\"\/>\u200b<span class=\"pull-double\">\u201c<\/span>and the <span class=\"caps\">EV<\/span> supply chain has expanded rapidly over the past decade or\u00a0so.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Solid-state transformers also weigh less and take up less space than the gear they replace, he said. They\u2019re capable of a\u00a0wider range of functions, including regulating power quality fluctuations, which can wreak havoc on data centers, and they can be used for multiple applications, unlike traditional equipment.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\">As for the cost, Baglino said prices for Heron Power\u2019s electronics are competitive with those for traditional tech. <span class=\"push-double\"\/>\u200b<span class=\"pull-double\">\u201c<\/span>We\u2019re not asking for any premium over the solutions they\u2019re buying right\u00a0now.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Like <span class=\"caps\">DG<\/span> Matrix and Resilient Power, Heron Power is targeting data centers, solar and battery farms, and dense <span class=\"caps\">EV<\/span> charging sites for early adoption, since that\u2019s a <span class=\"push-double\"\/>\u200b<span class=\"pull-double\">\u201c<\/span>fast-growing market with motivated customers,\u201d Baglino said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Heron Power\u2019s Heron Link devices are designed to handle typical utility distribution substation voltages of <span class=\"numbers\">34<\/span>.<span class=\"numbers\">5<\/span> kilovolts and to deliver <span class=\"numbers\">600<\/span>-volt direct current. That higher-than-typical voltage aligns with the latest data center power architectures being <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.nvidia.com\/blog\/gigawatt-ai-factories-ocp-vera-rubin\/\">pursued by major <span class=\"caps\">AI<\/span> players such as Nvidia<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span class=\"dquo\">\u201c<\/span>But we have every intention of bringing the benefits of solid-state transformers to the AC-to-AC world,\u201d he said, referring to the need for transformers to step voltage up and down without converting it to direct current. <span class=\"push-double\"\/>\u200b<span class=\"pull-double\">\u201c<\/span>A single <span class=\"caps\">SST<\/span> can decouple faults, it can do power factor control, it can do voltage regulation, frequency regulation, all this monitoring and control of the power flow that utilities don\u2019t have with passive transformers.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\">While these are all useful capabilities, utilities are not eager adopters of novel technologies. Over the previous decade, companies that have built power electronics for utility distribution grids have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sunsethq.com\/blog\/why-did-gridco-systems-fail\">closed up shop<\/a> or have been <a href=\"https:\/\/sentientenergy.com\/press\/varentec-acquisition\/\">acquired and fallen from public view<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\">But the combination of technical improvements and growing grid pressures may make this decade different. <span class=\"push-double\"\/>\u200b<span class=\"pull-double\">\u201c<\/span>Once we prove the technology is performing well\u201d for solar farms and data centers, Baglino said, <span class=\"push-double\"\/>\u200b<span class=\"pull-double\">\u201c<\/span>we can go back to utilities.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The technology itself is not brand new.
